CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Houston Volleyball program fell 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25) at Cincinnati on Friday night inside St. Ursula Academy.
With the decision, the Cougars fall to 6-9 on the season on 2-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bearcats improve to 7-12 overall and 5-2 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati never trailed in taking the opening set, 25-20.
In the second set, the Cougars turned in a staggering .351 clip, highlighted by six kills from senior outside hitter Brianna Lynch, as the two teams traded points late. Tied 23-23, Houston got a kill from senior middle blocker Brianna Gardner and took advantage of a Bearcat attack error to claim a 25-23 edge and even the match at 1-1 at intermission.
The third set proved to be the most contested of the match with both teams pulling even at 16 points and swapping the lead six times. Tied 22-22, Cincinnati closed the set on a 3-1 run to flip the script with a 25-23 victory and retake a 2-1 edge.
Houston led the majority of the fourth set, before the Bearcats claimed an 18-17 edge and pulled away for a 25-21 win to secure the 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior setter Keandra McCardell recorded 10 assists to move into fifth all-time at Houston with 2,871 career assists, passing Bethany Hill (2,865; 1995-98).
Lynch recorded a career-high 23 kills. Her previous best was 19 kills, set earlier this season against McNeese on Sept. 8.
Gardner recorded 11 kills, her fifth time to record double figures on the season.
Freshman setter Abby Irvine tallied 32 assists.
Defensively, sophomore libero Katie Karbo and senior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh recorded 27 and 12 digs, respectively.
Cincinnati outhit the Cougars, .247-.185.
The Cougars will continue play in The American with an 11:30 a.m. CT first serve at ECU on Sunday.
