Volleyball Wins Third Straight C-USA Match
Oct. 14, 2001
FORT WORTH, Texas - After taking a week off from the competitive court, the University of Houston volleyball team showed little rust Saturday in taking a 3-0 win over TCU at the Rickel Center. The Cougars, who are currently in the middle of a stretch that has them playing only one match in 12 days, used the arms of Jennifer Wittenburg, Jenny Tanneberger and Jane Anne Karasek to win their second match all-time in the series against TCU. Wittenburg led all players with 21 kills and posted the 1,110th kill of her Cougar career in the first game while Tanneberger added 14 kills and only two errors in 27 chances. Karasek also added 13 kills with only two errors of her own in the win. With the win the Cougars (8-8, 5-2 C-USA) extended their Conference USA winning streak to three matches, moved into a tie for fourth place in the league standings and reached the .500 mark for the first time since Sept. 23. Game one proved to be a close affair until the Cougars used a 7-0 run midway through to take control. Wittenburg and Karasek highlighted the rally with two kills apiece. In game two, the Cougars fell behind early and trailed 16-8 at one point. After pulling to within 18-14, UH exploded on a 6-0 run to take a 20-18 lead and would never trail again, even through the Horned Frogs (5-12, 2-5 C-USA) pulled to within two points late. In game three, Houston would jump out to 9-2 and 17-9 leads and never be threatened. Marci King led TCU with eight kills and nine digs.
The Cougars return home to play host to two C-USA matches this weekend. UH meets East Carolina in a 7:30 p.m. match Friday in the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion and then plays host to Charlotte at 7 p.m. Saturday.
