HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Kariny Ritter and Justine Farmer registered double-doubles as the University of Houston volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Southern Miss (30-20, 30-24, 30-13) at the Payne Center on Friday night. The Cougars (9-8, 4-1 C-USA) have won four consecutive Conference USA matches and remain tied for second place in the C-USA standings with Memphis, who defeated East Carolina, 3-2, earlier tonight. Jennifer Hohl ignited a balanced offense to a season-best .400 attack percentage. The Indiana native passed out 52 assists on the evening and surpassed the 50-assist mark for the fifth time this season. Hohl's efficiency allowed four hitters to attack at over a .300 clip. The Houston hitters registered a season-low 14 attack errors for the entire match. Reigning C-USA Player of the Week, Kariny Ritter, headlined all Cougars smashing 18 kills to go along with 10 kills. Justine Farmer tallied 16 kills and 11 digs en route to her team-high ninth double-double on the season. Becca Sartori and Millicent Martin provided a strong middle attack for Houston. Sartori connected on a season-best .571 hitting percentage, knocking 13 kills on 21 attempts with only one error. Martin chipped in a season-high eight kills on 14 swings, smacking a .500 attack percentage.
Jaci Gonzalez corralled a match-high 22 digs to anchor the Houston back row. The two teams split the first 20 points of game one. Houston crept out to a 15-13 advantage before breaking the game open on a 10-3 run. During the spurt, the Cougars received kills from five different players taking the opening game, 30-20.
After a similar close start in game two, Houston calls on another mid-game run sparked by three Southern Miss (4-9, 0-6 C-USA) attack errors. UH claimed game two, 30-24. Houston charged out of the locker room scoring 10 of the first 13 points in the third game. The Cougars close out the match, 30-13, on back-to-back kills by Martin and Farmer. Houston concludes the weekend at UCF on Sunday afternoon before returning the Bayou City for a five-match home streak. First serve against the Golden Knights is slated for 1pm in Orlando.
