PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – A midweek non-conference match ended with the University of Houston volleyball team topping Prairie View A&M in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 25-22) Tuesday night.

Houston (12-9, 4-2 American) took the first set over the Panthers (8-20, 2-2 SWAC), forcing more errors by the home team. But, Prairie View avenged in the second set with a 25-23 win to tie the match at one heading into the half.

The Cougars came back from the break determined to win the third set. Prairie View tied the set 7-7 before Houston went up 13-7 on a 5-0 run by three consecutive kills and several errors by the Panthers. Houston ran away with the set winning by 10 points. Collectively, the Cougars hit .370 in the set with 14 kills and only four errors.

A 7-3 run by Houston to start the fourth set initiated a Prairie View timeout. Three errors by the Cougars front row tied the score at seven once again, forcing a Houston timeout to regroup. The two teams battled point-for-point for the rest of the set, but the Cougars pulled out the 25-23 win, clinching the match 3-1.

Middle blocker Emily Howard was Houston’s leading attacker as she recorded 13 kills, hitting .320. She also had a solo block and a block assist against the Panthers. Freshman Sarita Mikals hit her 16th double figure kill match of the season with 10 kills.  Kadi Kullerkann was just short of double figure kills as she knocked nine kills and a .200 hitting average.
