GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The University of Houston Volleyball program fell 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 18-25, 23-25) at ECU on Sunday afternoon inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
With the decision, the Cougars fall to 6-10 on the season on 2-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Pirates improve to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-2 in the opening set, Houston took control with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from both senior middle blocker Brianna Gardner and sophomore outside hitter Megan Duncan, to take a 12-6 lead. ECU made a charge late to tie the match at 23-23 before a kill from senior outside hitter Brianna Lynch and a Pirate attack error closed the set in favor of the Cougars.
Both teams traded points across the early goings of the second set. Holding a one-point edge at 15-14, ECU used a 7-1 run to pull away for a 25-22 win to even the match at 1-1 at intermission.
The Pirates carried momentum out of the break, never trailing en route to a 25-18 victory in the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw the two teams pull even on nine points and swap the lead five times. Tied 13-13, the Cougars got kills from Lynch and redshirt junior middle blocker Chenelle Walker, and capitalized on an ECU error to take the lead. With Houston leading 22-20, the Pirates rallied with a 5-1 run to secure the 25-23 set win and 3-1 match victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freshman setter Abby Irvine recorded her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with a 21-assist, career-high 16-dig effort.
Lynch led Houston and tied for the match high with 11 kills, her eighth time to lead the team on the season.
Duncan and Walker recorded 10 kills apiece, while Gardner finished with nine kills and two service aces, respectively.
Senior setter Keandra McCardell finished with 17 assists and eight digs.
Defensively, sophomore libero Katie Karbo tallied 14 digs and five assists.
Despite being outhit .247-.201, Houston out-killed ECU, 56-55.
The Cougars will continue play in The American with home matches against UCF on Oct. 20 and USF on Oct. 22.
