Volleyball downs USF in five

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Houston volleyball team outlasted the South Florida Bulls Saturday night in a closely contested five game match for a 32-30, 27-30, 34-36, 30-23, 15-10 win. The Cougars (7-14, 3-4 C-USA) jumped out to a one game lead by taking the first game 32-30 but fell behind in the match after the Bulls took game two 30-27 and game three 36-34. With their backs against the wall, Houston took game four 30-23 and then finished off the match 15-10 in game five. Saturday night's win was the first of the season for the Cougars after their opponent had taken two games. The Cougars were led by Kelly McAnelly and Cinthia Piva who both totaled over 20 kills in the match and both posting double doubles. McAnelly finished with 27 kills and 10 digs while Piva knocked down 24 kills and picked up 12 digs. Loure Dews also finished with a double double with 15 kills and 10 block assists. Becca Sartori finished with 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage, Jaci Gonzalez had a match high 15 digs while setter Mirela Vasconcellos finished with 48 assists.
The Cougars are currently tied for eighth place in C-USA with TCU and will host the Marquette Golden Eagles Friday night and the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion.
