Volleyball Earns 3-1 Win Over East Carolina on Senior Night

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team gave its three seniors a fitting send off with a win in their final match on their home court, defeating East Carolina 3-1 (22-25, 25-10, 25-15, 25-12) Saturday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center. With the win Houston improves to 9-19 on the year and 6-7 in Conference USA. The Cougars are now 9-1 all-time against the Pirates. Sophomore Ingrida Zauere finished with a game-high 12 kills and nine digs. Freshman Jasmine Terry and Chandace Tryon added 11 kills, apiece. Junior Amanda Carson turned in 21 digs, while freshman Tara Roenicke had 40 assists. The Cougars took a commanding six point lead to open the first set, 10-4, but slowly allowed East Carolina to claw back and tie the set, 15-15. The Pirates then would eventually take a 17-15 lead and extend in to four points, 19-15, before a Houston timeout. UH scored the first point off the bench but gave up the next three points to trail, 22-16. The Cougars pull within two but they would be able to secure the win, falling 25-22. UH managed to outhit the Pirates 15-11 in the first set but were outblocked 5-0. With the scored showing 4-3 in the second set, Houston mounted a 13-0 to hold a commanding 17-3. The Pirates would manage to reach the 10 point plateau but the deficit would be to much to overcome and the Cougars would even the match at two sets each with a 25-10 win. Cave, Zauere and Tryon would all have a team-high six kills through the first two sets. The third set followed a different path than the second. The early going of the set was a close one but UH was able to slowly build a lead, including a 21-13 score into a ECU timeout. Out of the break the Pirates would score the first point but Houston closed out the match with a 4-1 run. Zauere capped the set with a kill to give Houston the win. Houston held a slim but comfortable lead through the early going of the fourth set. They would extend that lead to eight points, 19-11, prompting an ECU timeout and UH came off the bench scoring three straight points en route to securing the win, 25-12 win. Prior to Saturday's match, Houston honored its three seniors Kinsey Cave, Alik Cardoso de Sa and Erin Rice. Saturday's match also closes out the 2009 home slate. The Cougars will wrap-up the regular season with three road matches, starting with UTEP on Nov. 6, continuing with Tulane on Nov. 8 and concluding with Rice on Nov. 12. The 2009 Conference USA Championship will be held on Nov. 19-21 at Rice.
