Cougars Say Good-bye To Seniors
Nov. 9, 2004
HOUSTON - It was Senior Night for the Houston volleyball team on Tuesday night as the Cougars hosted city-rival Rice, in what would be the last home match for seniors Loure Dews and Mirela Vasconcellos.
The Cougars were hoping to close out their final home stand of 2004 with a win, but the Owls crashed Houston's plans by handing the Cougars a 3-0 loss.
Before the match, Dews, along with her parents, and Vasconcellos, with her mother who flew in from Brazil, were honored by the University and the home fans for their play and dedication to the Cougar volleyball program over the last four years.
On the night, Dews recorded seven kills, two digs and two blocks, while Vasconcellos chipped in six assists a service ace and six digs.
Junior Kariny Ritter led all players with 15 kills while sophomore teammate Becca Sartori added 10 on the evening. Junior Jaci Gonzalez who now holds the top three spots for most digs in a single season, came within one dig of tying the all-time digs record, a feat she will easily accomplish when she steps out on the floor Thursday.
Houston (8-18, 5-6) will now look to increase their standings in Conference USA with the final two conference matches coming up this week in Saint Louis on Thursday and Memphis on Saturday, before beginning the Conference Tournament next Saturday, Nov. 19.
