NEW ORLEANS -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 15-25) at Tulane on Wednesday night inside Devlin Fieldhouse.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-21 overall and 0-15 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave improved to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in league action.
Junior setter Keandra McCardell registered her third straight double-double effort with 19 assists and 11 digs. The double-double is McCardell's seventh of the season and 27th overall of her career.
Junior outside hitter Brianna Lynch led Houston with 10 kills, while outside hitters Sarah Afflerbaugh and Faith Squier each recorded seven kills. Freshman libero Katie Karbo led all players with 21 digs.
Tulane's Tea Juric posted a double-double in a 13-kill, 12-dig performance. Setter Justine Bowers amassed 29 assists and seven digs. Libero Makenzie Frieden turned in 20 digs.
The Green Wave outhit Houston .295-.185, holding a 46-35 advantage in kills and 69-62 lead in digs. The Cougars held a 3-2 edge in blocks.
Houston jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set behind two kills from Afflerbaugh. However, Tulane rallied to pull even at 6-6. Tied 11-11, two attack errors and a kill from Sarah Ray allowed the Green Wave to pull ahead. Trailing 21-16, Houston made a one more push to get back into the set with a 4-1 run, but ultimately fell 25-22.
The two teams traded points late into the second set. Tied 17-17, Tulane capitalized on three quick kills and a Cougar error to go on a 4-1 run and force Houston to call timeout. Out of the break, the Cougars got kills from sophomore middle blocker Chenelle Walker and Lynch on either side of a service ace from sophomore setter Katie Krebs to tie the set at 21-21. Unfortunately, the Green Wave outpaced Houston 4-2 the rest of the way to take a 25-23 win and 2-0 lead into intermission.
In the third set, Tulane never trailed en route to a 25-15 victory to close the match in straight sets.
