Houston Volleyball Falls to Cincinnati
Nov. 10, 2002 HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team fell to Cincinnati 3-0 at Hofheinz Pavilion Sunday afternoon in an intense Conference USA match-up. The Cougars, who were outscored by the Bearcats 30-22, 30-27 and 30-25, are now 16-9 overall and 6-4 in C-USA play. Laura Koster led all hitters with 18 kills and contributed six digs for the Cougars. Three-time 2002 Conference USA Player of the Week Jenny Tanneberger added 17 kills (.295) and six digs. Setter Donna Sellen added 36 assists, 13 digs and nine kills. Three Cougars tallied double-digit digs with libero Jaci Gonzalez posting 18 and Mirela Vasconcellos adding 15 to the defensive effort. The Bearcats prevailed in game one hitting .439 as a squad. Cincinnati outblocked Houston 9.5 to 5.0 and outhit the Cougars .258 to .173. Houston committed eight service errors and 24 attacking errors in the three games. Julie DuPont and Bonita Wise led the Bearcats (19-6, 9-1 C-USA) with 17 kills each . Laura Lauder, Trish Ladusaw and Maddie Barron tallied double-digit digs for the Bearcats and setter Lauder totaled 42 assists for Cincinnati. The Cougars, who are now behind in the all-time series against Cincinnati 5-4, have already earned their 2002 C-USA Tournament berth with three regular-season conference matches remaining. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion as Houston battles Tulane Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Cougars' final home match of 2002. The contest, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 4, will be designated 'Senior Night' to honor Tanneberger, Sellen and Jane Anne Karasek.
