Final Stats

DALLAS - Sunshine Misa-Uli came off the bench to slap 13 kills on a career-best .550 attack percentage, but the University of Houston volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision to SMU (24-30, 23-30, 29-31) Friday night in a Conference USA match at Moody Coliseum on the SMU campus.

Misa-Uli returned to the floor for the first time since the East Carolina match on Oct. 22. She ripped eight of her 13 kills in the third game.

Kelly McAnelly paced Houston (17-13, 8-7 C-USA) with a team-best 16 kills. The Houston native now has 1,408 kills passing Jennifer Wittenburg (1999-2001) not only for the No. 3 spot in program history in addition to the No. 21 position on the Conference USA career list.

Ashley Calhoun paced Houston with 13 digs, while Krystal Schulle passed out 42 assists to go along with nine digs. Becca Sartori powered home nine kills on a .400 attack percentage.

SMU (15-14, 6-9 C-USA) played strong defense, recording a season-best 17 blocks and held the Cougars to .173 attack percentage for the match. The Mustangs also held Justine Farmer to eight kills and -.032 attack percentage. It was only the third time in the last 35 matches dating back to last season that Farmer was held to under double-digit kills.

Rachel Giubilato paced three SMU players that registered double-doubles, cranking 20 kills on a .326 clip and added 11 digs. Caitlin Rainbird notched 11 kills on a .458 mark to go along with 11 digs, while Natalie Peters popped 10 kills and 10 blocks.

 

 

The two teams started the opening game going back and forth, featuring seven ties in addition to six lead changes. SMU took control of the frame, scoring the final five points for a 30-24 win. The Mustangs were paced by 11 Giubilato kills and outhit the Cougars .326 to .163.

SMU kept the momentum and jumped out to a 19-14 lead in game two. The Cougars crept back to within 21-18, but the Mustangs regroup after a timeout to go on a 9-4 spurt to take a 30-23 victory.

SMU looked to close out the match with a sweep, gaining a 19-13 advantage in the third game. The Cougars chipped away on Calhoun's serve and grabbed a 22-21 spread on a Misa-Uli kill. After trading sideouts, Houston strung together consecutive kills from McAnelly and Erin Rice coupled with a SMU error for a 29-26 lead.

The Mustangs fired back with three kills of its own to even the game at 29-29. SMU got a critical block on Farmer to take the lead and used a Candice Davis ace to clinch the match, 31-29.
