Volleyball swept by Rice
Nov. 12, 2003
The University of Houston volleyball team never found its rhythm Wednesday night as cross-town rival Rice University swept the Cougars 3-0 in a late season non-conference match up at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Owls jumped out to an early lead by taking game one 30-24 as the Cougars struggled to get their offense going. Houston hit just .118 percent in the opening game. In game two Houston (8-18) was led by Cinthia Piva and Kelly McAnelly who both tallied seven kills, but it was not enough to overcome the Owls' .343 hitting percentage and Rice took the game 30-26. In game three Houston jumped out to an early lead, but Rice bounced back to take the game and seal the match with a 30-25 win. Houston was led offensively by McAnelly's 16 kills and Piva's 15 while both players finished with 16.5 points. The Owls had just one player reach double digits in kils as Lindsey Carter totaled 10.
The Cougars will be in action again Friday night when they take on the East Carolina Pirates at 7:30 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion.
