HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite six kills from freshman outside hitter Silvia Pertens, Houston was unable to keep pace with Cincinnati in a 25-16, opening-set loss.
In the second set, the team teams traded points early. Tied 9-9, the Cougars went on a 5-1 run, highlighted by two blocks and a kill from senior middle blocker Brianna Gardner, to take a 14-10 advantage. However, Cincinnati responded with an 8-1 run and never trailed the rest of the way en route to a 25-20 set win and 2-0 lead at intermission.
The two teams again went back and forth to open the third set. Tied 8-8, the Bearcats used a 6-2 surge to retake the lead at 14-10. Cincinnati outpaced the Cougars, 11-10, the rest of the way to claim another 25-20 decision to close the match in straight sets.
