Volleyball Eliminated from C-USA Championship, Falls to Southern Miss 3-1
Nov. 20, 2009
HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team was eliminated from the Conference USA Championship, 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 11-25) by the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Friday night at Tudor Fieldhouse on the campus of Rice University. The loss ends the Cougars season and they finish with a 9-23 overall record and a 6-10 mark in league action. In her final match in a Houston uniform, senior Kinsey Cave led all Cougars with 12 kills, while adding two blocks. Freshman Jasmine Terry added 11 kills and four blocks and freshman Tara Roenicke led the team with 44 assists. Junior Amanda Carson finished with 20 digs. The Cougars played the Golden Eagles close in the early going of the opening set but Southern Miss was able to put together a 4-0 run to begin to pull away, 13-8, forcing head coach Bill Walton to call a timeout. Houston came off the bench and continued to battle Southern Miss, keeping the deficit at four, 19-15, before calling their second timeout. Unfortunately the cushion that the Golden Eagles built in the early points was enough to hold off UH and earn the first set win, 25-19. Houston took the Golden Miss momentum in the first set and channeled it into its own 13-9 lead, before a timeout from the Southern Miss bench halted play. Southern Miss scored the first three points of the bench to pull within one and force Walton to call a timeout and regroup his team. He did just that as the Cougars came off the bench to extend their lead to five, 20-15. UH would continue to dominate the set and go on to even the match, 1-1, with a 25-19 win. The Cougars looked primed to move to 2-1 in the match when they came back on the court for the third set. And despite a score that was only in Houston's favor by a few points, the Cougars controlled the momentum of the set. Only when a Cougar timeout was called with the score 17-13 in the Golden Eagles favor did the tide change. Southern Miss pulled away from that point on and went on to steal the 25-20 win. Southern Miss jumped on the board in the fourth set, 4-1, carrying the momentum the put together to win the third set. They would never relinquish that early lead, going on to hand the Cougars a disappointing 25-11 loss in the fourth set and ending Houston's season. Southern Miss is the tournament's top seed and they advance to play Rice at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
