Memphis, Tenn. - Despite recording a season-high 101 digs, the University of Houston volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 7-15) to Tulane Saturday afternoon in the C-USA Championship semifinals. The Cougars finish the season with a 19-12 record. Three Cougars set season-highs in digs against the Green Wave. Freshmen Nataliya Panova and Alik Cardoso de Sa each recorded 19 and 14 digs for the Cougars, while senior Kelsey King added 17 kills to tie her season-high. They added to the season-high 101 digs recorded by the team. Sophomore Lucy Chaurk was one block shy of tying her season-high, she finished the match with 11 blocks. She finishes the season with 155 total blocks the fourth highest total in single season history. She also recorded 137 block assists, the third highest total. Senior Justine Farmer finished her Cougar career with a game-high 19 kills against the Green Wave and 17 digs for her 12th double-double this season. The Cougars jumped out to a 7-2 lead to open the set behind three blocks from sophomore Lucy Charuk before a timeout came from the Tulane bench. Out of the break, Houston scored two quick points to push their lead to 10-3. At that point it looked like it was going to be all Cougars but the Green Wave battled back to within three, 14-11. Houston, however, was able to hold off Tulane and take a 25-21 first set win. Senior Justine Farmer led all players with six kills in the first set. The two teams tied the second set five times before knotting the score, 6-6. Houston then went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead, 13-6. Once again the lead would be too much for the Green Wave to overcome and the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the match. Through two sets, senior Kelsey King had a game-high 25 assists and 10 kills to give her 13 double-doubles this season. Farmer also added a game-high 11 kills. UH played from behind early in the set before tying the score 6-6 but the Green Wave responded with a 7-2 run to extend their lead, 13-8. That would be all they would need as they won the third set, 25-22. In the fourth set it looked as though the Cougars would take an easy win after scoring seven points to open the set but Tulane fought back and tied the 16-16. The Green Wave would go on to even the match, 2-2, by closing out the fourth set outscoring the Cougars 5-2 to take a 25-21 win. Tulane jumped out early on the Cougars in the fifth set, 6-2, before head coach called his firsts timeout to rally his team. But the Green would reach the halfway point first, 8-2, before the two teams switched sides. Houston would pull within five, 11-6 but Tulane would stamp their ticket to the championship match, scoring four of the next five points to win the set, 15-7. UP NEXT
