Houston Volleyball Looks To Future

Lucy Charuk Named AVCA All-American

Lucy Charuk Named To AVCA Midwest All-Region Team

Jan. 12, 2009

HOUSTON - Future University of Houston volleyball player Tara Roenicke was recently selected to carry the American flag during the opening ceremonies of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, Australia, Jan. 15.

She becomes the fourth USA Volleyball athlete to be named flag bearer in the last 18 months and the first beach volleyball player. Her nomination to carry the flag told the story of her sister who was diagnosed with terminal cancer at age 10 and while Roenicke's mother cared for her sister, she turned to beach volleyball for comfort.

Her sister survived the cancer and Roenicke continued her career as a beach volleyball player, representing the US in two FIVB youth world championships.

Roenicke recently finished fifth at the 2008 FIVB Under-19 World Championships in The Hague, Netherlands.

In addition to her flag carrying duties, Roenicke will also compete with partner Summer Ross in the beach volleyball competition beginning on Jan. 15. The beach volleyball competition runs through Jan. 18.

The Festival will host 1,500 athletes from 25 countries.

Roenicke, a native of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., will join the Houston volleyball team in the fall of 2009.
