UH To Host 2001 C-USA Volleyball Championship
June 20, 2001
The 2001 Conference USA Volleyball Championship Tournament, to be held November 15-18 at Hofheinz Pavilion on the University of Houston campus, will highlight the Cougars' upcoming schedule this fall. It will be the second time for UH to stage the annual league tournament after hosting the event in its second year as a C-USA member in 1997.
Year-in and year-out, the Cougar volleyball team routinely faces one of the toughest schedules in the nation and this season will be no different. In 2001 Houston will face seven teams that earned bids to the NCAA Championship Tournament last season, including nationally-ranked Florida and Texas A&M (twice). Other NCAA Tournament teams on the 2001 schedule include C-USA rivals Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida as well as non-conference foes Kansas State and Washington State.
Part of the rugged schedule features invitations to two prestigious tournaments. Houston will open the 2001 campaign across town at the Rice Invitational (August 31) and later play at the Wildcat Classic in Manhattan, Kansas, and the Florida Invitational in Gainesville. Home matches this season promise exciting action starting with Texas A&M on September 18. UH will host new C-USA members East Carolina and TCU as well as Tulane, Saint Louis, Memphis, Charlotte, DePaul, and Marquette.
The Cougars wrap up the home schedule with the C-USA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament is scheduled to begin the weekend of November 29 and culminate with the Final Four in San Diego, California, on December 14-16.
