Houston Volleyball Releases 2012 Schedule
June 20, 2012 2012 Volleyball Schedule (PDF) HOUSTON—The University of Houston volleyball program has released its 2012 schedule that includes three tournaments and 12 home matches, highlighted by the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup on Sept. 14-15 at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Houston, under the direction of new head coach Kaddie Platt, will play five contests this season against programs that finished in the AVCA Top 25 final poll in 2011 including No. 6-ranked Pepperdine, No. 7-ranked Florida State, and No. 23-ranked Ohio State twice, and No. 24-ranked Oregon, while C-USA foe Tulsa received votes. “Our schedule provides quality competition in both conference and non-conference play. Playing nine matches against 2011 tournament teams will challenge us to develop into the best team we can be,” said Platt. 2012 will offer many opportunities for great volleyball. The schedule has potential to provide a solid RPI, which will help us as we aim for post-season play.” The Cougars are prepped to open 2012 the weekend of Aug. 24-25 at the Sports Imports Classic hosted by Ohio State. Participating in the Buckeyes’ event will be Toledo, Oregon, Ohio State, and Houston.
Following the weekend opener, Houston will make its way to Nashville, Tennessee to take part in Lipscomb’s tournament on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Cougars will square off against Missouri, Appalachian State, and Lipscomb.
For the second straight year and fourth in the last five years, Houston will host its annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup on Sept. 14-15, featuring powerhouses such as Florida State, Pepperdine, and Ohio State. The Cougars will play the final game on Friday and two matches on Saturday.
“There will be some great volleyball in Houston with an outstanding field of teams in the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. All three opponents finished among the Top 25 in the nation a year ago,” said Platt. It will prepare us for a tough conference schedule as well as post season play. We hope many of the area club and high school programs come out and support us.” Houston will begin its Conference USA slate on Tuesday, Sept. 18 when it travels across town to Rice for a 7 p.m. match. The Cougars will remain on the road for two more matches at UAB and Memphis, before returning home for its conference home opener on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. against Tulsa. Houston will remain home for four straight home matches before returning to the road on Oct. 12 at East Carolina. The Cougars will play at home for the last time on Nov. 4 when it welcomes Southern Miss to town for a 1 p.m. Sunday showdown. The final two regular season contests will be on the road at SMU and Tulsa on Nov. 9-11. Conference USA will bring back the C-USA Championship after playing 2010 and 2011 without a post-season tournament. This year’s Championship will be held on Nov. 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla. “I am excited about the return of the C-USA tournament as it will bring some great competition and added excitement to finish the season,” said Platt. Houston will begin preseason practice on Aug. 8 under new head coach Kaddie Platt.
