HOUSTON -- Anticipation builds for the start of the 2012 season as the University of Houston volleyball team under new head coach Kaddie Platt had an impressive showing during the its Red & White Scrimmage and Kids Clinic on Saturday afternoon in the Athletics/Alumni Center.

Composed of two competitive teams, making up all 18 members of the Cougars' squad, Platt and assistant coaches Jenny Andrew and David Hyte provided fans with excitement in a high energy match in preparation for the season opener next week. 

"We have a lot to improve on, but today was a great test for our team," said Platt. "Our goal is to get better everyday and we will be better tomorrow because of today's effort." 

The Red team earned the match win, earning wins in all three sets: 25-18, 25-12, 25-11. Every player contributed to the win as the team's were rotated every set.

On the match, the Red team posted 43 kills to the White's 20. Leading the way offensively were seniors Katie Norris, Chandace Tryon and junior Kadi Kullerkann with nine kills each, while senior Stephanie Nwachukwu and freshman Shelby Vance added five. Senior Abby Simmons and sophomore Caitlin Ogletree controlled the offensive tempo, posting 17 and 14 assists, respectively as the Cougars' setters. Sophomore Natalie Keck added three service aces to cap a strong offensive showing.


 

 

Defensively, Keck earned 13 digs, while freshman Olivia O'Dell and Norris each collected 11 and 10, respectively.

Houston Volleyball group tickets are available to organizations of 10 or more people who purchase tickets in advance. Group pricing is not available at the door.

UP NEXT
Houston will prep for its season opener on the road in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio State's Tournament next weekend, Aug. 24-25. The Cougars will open play on Friday against Toledo at 10:30 a.m. CT.
