4-0 Cougars Continue Road Stand at Cross-town Rival Rice
Sept. 5, 2002
The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its campaign for a 21st consecutive winning season this Friday at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational at Autry Court in Houston. The Cougars will face TCU (4-0) in a non-conference match, Louisiana-Lafayette (4-0) and host Rice (1-3).
After last week's Cougar football and soccer victories, the UH volleyball squad is looking to gain additional bragging rights in winning the trifecta against their cross-town rivals. The Cougars beat the Owls in a close 3-2 match in 2001.
The Cougars are coming off four wins and a tournament crown from the Hilton/Lamar Cardinal Classic. UH defeated Centenary and Southeastern Louisiana in the teams' first ever meeting and improved its series records against Louisiana Tech and Lamar. Cougars Jane Anne Karasek and Jenny Tanneberger were named to the 2002 All-Tournament Team.
UH is led by All-C-USA Preseason Team selection Tanneberger. The San Antonio, Texas, native has 78 kills, 28 digs and 26 blocks in four matches this season. Senior setter Donna Sellen and outside hitter Karasek are the other top Cougar returnees. Houston native Laura Koster (Syracuse) and San Antonian Jaci Gonzalez (Sandra Day O'Connor High) made spectacular debuts as Cougars last week, adding 55 kills and 67 digs, respectively.
UH will face Lamar again in its home opener September 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars will also get another chance to battle it out with Rice and TCU at Hofheinz Pavilion on October 17-18.
