Mikals Named The American Freshman of the Week

HOUSTON - Freshman Sarita Mikals has been named The American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for her stellar performance during week two of the season.
The 6'-1" outside hitter recorded her first two collegiate double doubles during week two of competition The first one came against Texas Southern on Tuesday (17 kills, 13 digs) while the second came during the championship match of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Tournament against host team The University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday (22 kills, 10 digs).
In just 14 sets last week, Mikals recorded 54 kills in 142 attempts (.225 hitting percentage) and 32 digs. She now leads the Cougars for the season in kills (88), kills per set (3.67), and scored 99.0 points.
Setter Sophie Paine was selected to The American Player of the Week Honor Roll this week as well.
Paine was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Tournament. She recorded 158 total assists on the week, including a season-high 57 against Texas Southern. Paine's .545 hitting percentage led the Cougars for the week.
