Cougar Volleyball Takes Tournament Crown
KNOXVILLE, Tenn -- On Saturday (Sept. 9) the University of Houston volleyball team (4-2) won the tournament title of the TOYOTA Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee.
At the tournament the Cougars beat previously undefeated and defending ACC champion North Carolina 3-1, a team that was ranked 28th in the national coaches' poll at the start of the week. UH also swept Jacksonville State three games to none in a quick contest to finish the tournament 2-1 overall. Houston claimed the Classic crown over North Carolina and Tennessee by having the best win percentage in games played between those three teams (5-4).
Senior Bobbi Stewart (Houston/Dobie HS) was named the MVP of the tournament, averaging 4.73 kills per game in the three matches. Senior Michelle Frazier (Houston/Kingwood HS) was also named to the all-tournament team.
Houston will next face another ACC and SEC tandem at the Arkansas
Invitational in Fayetteville next weekend. The tournament field of UH,
Virginia, Michigan and host Arkansas features four teams that all earned
bids to the NCAA Tournament last season.
