Wittenburg Named C-USA Volleyball Player Of The Week
HOUSTON -- University of Houston senior Jennifer Wittenburg has been named the Conference USA Volleyball Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday (Sept. 17).
Wittenburg, an outside hitter for the Cougars, was named to the all-tournament team of the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville over the weekend after averaging 6.62 kills and 5.39 defensive digs per game against three opponents that all advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The Houston native and former Cy Falls High School standout blasted 27 kills and broke a 12-year old UH record with 34 defensive digs in a single match against No. 23 ranked Michigan - helping the Cougars push the match to a full five games. She then came back the next morning and spiked 34 kills with 20 digs in an upset win over SEC power Arkansas, helping UH snap the Razorbacks1 streak of 20-straight regular season home wins that dated back to 1998. Wittenburg (and the Cougars) then came back in the round-robin tournament less than two hours later and recorded 25 kills with 16 digs and a .296 hitting percentage in a 3-1 win against Virginia.
The Cougar volleyball team (6-3 overall) will next face South Florida on
the road in Tampa in its C-USA opener on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Houston will be
back home in Hofheinz Pavilion to take-on Southern Miss at 7:30 p.m. on
Friday, Sept. 22
