TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 19) -- The University of Houston volleyball team rallied in the fifth and final game to win its Conference USA opener over South Florida Tuesday night in Tampa by a score of three games to two.

Having just been named the C-USA Player of the Week on Monday, UH senior hitter Jennifer Wittenburg spiked a career-high 35 kills with 24 defensive digs to pace the Cougars to a 15-10, 13-15, 15-9, 16-18, 15-12 league win on the road. Senior Bobbi Stewart adde 19 kills with 21 digs and four blocks as Houston won its third-straight.

After trailing 9-6 in the fifth game, UH rallied to take the lead 11-10. The match-winning point for Houston was when Cougar senior Michelle Frazier, the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year on a vote of the league's head coaches, blocked USF hitter Michelle Collier, the 1998 C-USA Player of the Year on a spike attempt. Frazier finished with six blocks and 14 kills on the night as Houston improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in C-USA play. South Florida fell to 7-4 on the year and 0-1 in Conference.

Houston will next be at home in Hofheinz Pavilion on Friday, September 22. The Cougars will face C-USA foe Southern Miss at 7:30 p.m.
