HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its Conference USA road swing with two matches this weekend. The Cougars will meet UAB at 7 p.m., Friday before traveling to Memphis for a 1 p.m. match Sunday.
Houston is coming off a 3-0 loss to cross-town rival Rice on Tuesday and sits at 1-10 overall and 0-1 in C-USA play heading into the weekend. In that match, Houston was held to just 18 total kills, but produced its best receiving game of the year with a perfect 1.000 percentage on 70 total receptions.
Houston is led on the attacking end by senior Katie Norris' 147 kills and 3.67/set. Senior Chandace Tryon follows with 113 kills and team-best .316 attacking percentage. Senior setter Abby Simmons paces the offense with 323 assists and eight service aces. Defensively, sophomore Natalie Keck has logged 128 digs, while freshman Olivia O'Dell follows with 95. Tryon leads the team with 10 block solos, while freshman Emily Howard has come on strong with six.
UAB is 6-8 and will play its first Conference USA match against the Cougars. The Blazers are coming off a 3-0 sweep over Jacksonville State in the Purdue Active Ankle Challenge. Sam Serley leads the offensive attack with 142 kills and 2.78/set and is strong along the net with 17 block solos. Defensively, Rachel Fairbanks has totaled 242 digs. UAB was selected to finish fourth in C-USA Preseason Coaches Poll just ahead of Houston.
Memphis will meet Rice on Friday before hosting Houston on Sunday. The Tigers are 5-9 and will open C-USA play with the Owls. Memphis is coming off of three wins and a loss at their own Tiger Invitational, which featured wins over UIC, Belmont and Alabama A&M. The Tigers are led on the attack by Altrese Hawkins' 209 kills and 4.18/set. Defensively, Lauren Hawkins has 11 block solos and Aleksandra Petronijevic has 206 digs. Memphis was selected to finish seventh in C-USA Preseason Coaches Poll voting.

Following the weekend contests, Houston will return home to host C-USA preseason favorite Tulsa on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and SMU on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
