Volleyball Hosts Record Numbers At Flo Hyman Clinic
Sept. 22, 2013
HOUSTON - In its largest turnout since inception, more than 400 students from the Houston area participated in the annual Flo Hyman Memorial Youth Volleyball Clinic Saturday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The University of Houston volleyball team hosted the one-hour clinic. It was implemented last year during the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup to expose minority youth to the sport of volleyball and was open to all youth ages 8th grade and younger.
Youths participated in volleyball drills led by the team and coaching staff. Darlene Evans, former Houston volleyball player and teammate of Flo Hyman, spoke to the students after the clinic about Hyman and her impact.
"The turnout was great," Evans said. "It was wonderful seeing all those hopeful young students experiencing collegiate volleyball and the possibilities ahead of them."
Head coach Kaddie Platt and the rest of the Houston Volleyball coaching staff worked diligently to put together the clinic and invited school districts and volleyball club teams from the area to participate in the event.
"We had a fantastic turnout," Platt said. "The clinic was a great opportunity for the program to serve our community and grow the sport of volleyball. With the record numbers, we asked several club coaches in the area, Club South, Houston Skyline and Absolute Volleyball Academy, to help. I want to say thank you to the campers, coaches, teachers, parents and everyone who helped to make the event a spectacular event."
Former Houston Volleyball head coach Ruth Nelson has helped from afar to incorporate the importance of the youth clinic and the collegiate cup in honor of Flo Hyman.
"I am grateful to Ruth Nelson who has worked behind the scenes to make this tournament possible in Flo's name," Evans said. "Flo was a phenomenal teammate and inspiration both on and off the court. She was always humble, kind and gracious in her words and actions. I am grateful to have been her teammate and honored to speak on her behalf."
Houston Volleyball hosts several free clinics a year.
