CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 28) -- With perhaps its sharpest performance of the season, the University of Houston womens volleyball team coasted to a three-games-to-none sweep of Conference USA rival Charlotte Thursday night on the road in North Carolina. With a 15-2, 15-4, 15-7 win Houston remained undefeated in C-USA action and improved its overall record to 10-3 with its sixth-straight victory heading into Saturday afternoon's showdown with the University of Texas.
On Thursday the Cougars held Charlotte to a -.042 attack percentage and recorded their highest hitting mark (.264) since the second match of the season. UH was led on the night by seniors Jennifer Wittenburg and Bobbi Stewart. Wittenburg led all players with 14 kills and 14 defensive digs.
Stewart spiked 10 kills while converting on 19 attack attempts for .421 percentage.
After playing in complete control for the first two games of the match, the 49ers battled Houston to a 7-7 score in game three. The Cougars however then went on an 8-0 run to close out the game, 15-7. It was the third-straight 3-0 win over a conference team and its fifth match-sweep on the year.
Houston returns home for its next match on Saturday, September 30. The Cougars will meet state-rival Texas in Hofheinz Pavilion at 3:00 p.m. in the first part of a UH sports-day double-header. After the volleyball match the Cougar football team will host SMU in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Fans who show their UH football tickets at the volleyball match will be allowed into Hofheinz free of charge.
