Volleyball Returns Home For Weekend Series

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team returns home for two matches this weekend against Tulane and UTEP. Houston (9-8, 5-2 C-USA) will begin the weekend with a 7pm match against the Green Wave on Friday and will conclude the series Sunday at 1pm against the Miners.

Friday and Saturday's matches will be the first at the Athletics/Alumni Center since Sept. 23 when Houston defeated Southern Miss. Since then they played three straight road matches.

Houston is 16-4 against Tulane under head coach Bill Walton and 21-4 all-time. The Cougars have won the last five contests against the Green Wave dating back to Oct. 2, 2005. However, Tulane sits in second place in Conference USA with a 6-1 record and have won seven of their last eight matches.

The Cougars lead in the all-time series against the Miners 6-1 and are 4-1 with Walton at the helm. Houston's only loss against UTEP came in a 0-3 sweep on Sept. 30, 2005. Entering this weekend, UTEP has lost their last 10 matches.

Around the League
Through six matches in conference action, several Cougars find themselves ranked in the conference standings. As a team, however, Houston ranks third in digs averaging 17.67 per game and fourth in hitting percentage (.228), assists (13.48 ppm), blocks (2.60 ppm), opponent hitting percentage (.163) and kills (15.19 ppm).

Junior Justine Farmer is second in the league in kills with 123 and points at 132.5. Freshman Amanda Carson is fourth in digs (105/5.00 ppm) and sophomore Erin Rice is second in blocks (27.0/1.29 ppm).

 

 

Last Time Out
The Cougars went 1-1 last weekend in two conference matches against Tulsa and SMU. Houston fell 0-3 to Tulsa on Oct. 5. Despite the loss, freshman Hannah Sullivan led the way for the Cougars with her fourth career double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Her 14 kills were also a team high.

UH responded with a 3-0 win over SMU to finish the weekend. Sullivan added a game high 20 kills, while Farmer notched 16 kills.

Following the two home matches this weekend, Houston will travel to UAB and Memphis for two matches on Oct 19 (7pm) and Oct. 21 (1pm), respectively.
