HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team will hit the road for the first time since Sept. 23 when it travels to Greenville, N.C. on Friday for a 6 p.m. CT match against East Carolina before returning home to host Marshall at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Cougars will play its first home-away split weekend of the year as it looks to build on its 3-4 Conference USA record to date. Houston currently holds a 4-13 overall record and a 2-3 mark on the road and 2-6 record at home.
Houston is coming off a 1-1 weekend, having earned a 3-1 victory over Tulane before falling 3-0 to UTEP. Against Tulane, senior Katie Norris (24), Stephanie Nwachukwu (14) and Chandace Tryon (13) led the Cougars with 51 of the team's 60 kills and combined for an impressive .358 attacking percentage for a season-best.
On the season, Houston is hitting .175 as a team, led by Norris' 242 kills on 808 attempts. She is followed by Tryon's 175 kills and team-best .325 percentage, while Nwachukwu has added 122 kills to the mix. Senior setter Abby Simmons continues to pace the offense with 539 assists for 8.42 per set. Defensively, sophomore libero Natalie Keck leads the team in digs with 221, followed by Norris with 165. Tryon holds the team lead in block solos and assists with 13 and 52, respectively. Houston is out blocking its opponents 128.0 to 104.0.
ABOUT EAST CAROLINA
East Carolina returns to action with a 1-16 overall record and a 0-6 mark in Conference USA play. The Pirates' only win this season came in non-conference action against Bethune Cookman. East Carolina is led by Nicole Willis' 170 kills, while Hannah Allgood adds 125. Defensively, Shelby Beasley leads the team with 266 digs, while Kelly Derby has 70 total blocks to her name.
Houston and East Carolina will meet for the 15th time in history with the Cougars owning a 13-1 mark over the Pirates. Houston earned the 3-0 win in the teams' last meeting a year ago.
Marshall enters the weekend with a 15-5 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Conference USA play. The Thundering Herd will host Rice on Friday before playing the Cougars on Sunday. Marshall is riding a four-game winning streak with its only loss in the last 13 games has come against C-USA leader Tulsa. The Thundering Herd are led by Laura Der's 275 kills, while Dorothy Rahal leads the team with 331 assists.
Marshall and Houston will meet for the 11th time with the series tied at 5-5. The two teams split last year's series with the Cougars earning a 3-2 victory in the final meeting a year ago.
Houston Volleyball will sponsor a food drive to help the Houston Food Bank this Sunday. Fans can bring two canned good and receive half price off a general admission ticket. With five canned goods, University of Houston students can receive a free Houston Volleyball t-shirt.

Following Friday's contest at East Carolina, Houston will host Marshall on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Cougars will then hit the road the following weekend (Oct. 19-21) when they travel to UTEP and Tulane.
