UH Volleyball Team Defeats Crosstown Rival Rice
Cougars Improve To 18-5 Overall
HOUSTON, Texas -- The University of Houston volleyball team won its third-consecutive match with a three-games-to-one victory over crosstown rival Rice Wednesday night in Hofheinz Pavilion. With a 15-7, 4-15, 15-10, 15-3 win the Cougars improved to 18-5 overall.
Houston was paced on the night by senior outside hitter Bobbi Stewart, who led all players with 24 kills. The standout from Dobie High School also tallied 16 defensive digs and served a pair of aces. Cougar senior Michelle Frazier added 11 kills and five blocks while junior hitter Gabi Carbone spiked 10 kills with 14 digs and a .304 hitting percentage through three games before leaving with an injury.
After a 15-7 UH win in game one, Rice rebounded for a 15-4 victory in game two on the strength of 14-straight points after Houston built an early 4-1 lead. The Owls were led by outside hitter tandem of senior Karolina Zelinka and junior Leigh Leman. Leman posted a team-high 17 kills with 23 digs and three blocks. Zelinka recorded similar numbers of 16 kills, 24 digs and three blocks. Rice fell to 14-12 on the season.
The Cougars will next face Conference USA rivals Tulane and Southern Miss on the road this Friday and Saturday, respectively (November 1-2). First serve with the Tulane Green Wave will be at 7:00 p.m. in New Orleans.
