Higher Seeds Advance During Day One of C-USA Volleyball Tournament
Nov. 15, 2001 HOUSTON, Texas - The second round of the 2001 Healthy Choice Conference USA Volleyball Tournament continues Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion with another four matches featuring some of the region's top teams. Day one of the league's annual postseason event went as expected with all the higher seeds earning berths in the quarterfinals Friday. No. 7 seed Saint Louis started the day with a 3-0 win over No. 10 seed Charlotte, while No. 6 seed Marquette took a 3-1 decision over No. 11 seed Southern Mississippi in the battle of the Golden Eagles. In the evening session, No. 8 seed Memphis swept past No. 9 seed Tulane 3-0, with No. 5 seed DePaul winning by the same score against No. 12 seed East Carolina. The University of Houston, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, will see its first action of the postseason with an 8 p.m. match against DePaul. That contest will be a rematch from a week ago, when the Cougars took a 3-1 victory over the Blue Demons. Senior Jennifer Wittenburg, the 2001 C-USA Player of the Year, led the way for the Cougars with a school-record-tying 37 kills, the first of consecutive nights in which she tied the UH single-match record in kills. Friday's action will feature all four top seeds. The day starts with No. 2 seed Louisville meeting Charlotte at 1 p.m. with No. 3 seed South Florida facing Marquette in a 3 p.m. contest. Cincinnati, the regular season champion and No. 1 seed in the tournament, meets Memphis in a 6 p.m. match before the host Cougars take the floor against DePaul at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available for the tournament. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children while tournament booklets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.
