Houston, TX (Nov. 24) - For the second time in as many matches the University of Houston volleyball team outscored its opponent on the court but does not have a win to show for its effort. In the opening round of its own Houston Holiday Classic Nov. 24 in Hofheinz Pavilion, the Cougars outscored visiting Texas-San Antonio for the match 53-51, but it was the Road Runners that escaped with a victory by a score of three games to one.
Texas-San Antonio, a team that has now won 14 consecutive matches and already clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament next month, hung close in three tight games to claim a 15-13, 6-15, 15-12, 15-13 win. It was the same fate at the Conference USA Tournament where the Cougars outscored a streaking South Florida team that had won 19 matches in a row, 62-56, but the Bulls denied UH a victory by winning the match three games to two.
Houston, 20-10, can reverse the trend with its last regular-season match of the year against LSU in the Consolation of the Classic. In the opening match of the tournament SMU swept LSU three games to none by the scores of 15-10, 15-9, 15-13. Houston will now face LSU (15-16 overall) in the consolation game of the tournament beginning at 12 Noon. UTSA (23-8) meets SMU (14-16) in the Championship at 2:30 in Hofheinz Pavilion.
