Following a thrilling overtime victory over USF on Friday night, the University of Houston women's soccer team couldn't get the offense going and fell to the visiting UAB Blazers, 8-0, in a Conference USA match-up on Sunday (Oct. 24) afternoon at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
After Sally Palmer and Tara Kidwell combined to score UAB's first goal in the 17th minute and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Blazers erupted for seven goals in a span of 14 minutes in the second half.
Rebecca Garcia connected on a goal in the 64th minute off a rebound from a Houston defender, and Jessica Barr added back-to-back scores in the 69th minute, just 12 seconds apart, as she went one-on-one with Houston goalie Nicole Oliver.
Kidwell added two more scores in the 71st and 73rd minutes, respectively, to record a hat trick (three goals) on the afternoon.
The Blazers got their final two goals from Jill Porto. She first took a rebound in then76th minute, then carried a pass from teammate Jana Brauer into the net in the 79th minute.
The Cougars were out-shot on the day, 27-4, and despite allowing six goals, Oliver notched eight saves for the second straight game. She now brings her season total to 75, good for fifth all-time in Houston history.
All-Conference candidate and senior midfielder Nikki Hawkins was once again the leader on offense for the Cougars with two shots in the game, including one on-goal.
The loss drops Houston's record to 5-13-0 on the year, including 2-7-0 in C-USA play. The Cougars remain at home and close out the regular season next Friday, Oct. 29, against the visiting Charlotte 49ers at 7:00pm at Robertson Stadium.
