Cougar Soccer Shut Down by Memphis

After a scoreless first half, Memphis notched two goals in the second and held off the battling Cougar offense en route to handing the University of Houston women's soccer team its second straight 2-0 loss on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3) at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Memphis and Houston swarmed the Houston net. Melissa Savage took a bounce from Shoko Mikami and nudged it past Houston goalie Nicole Oliver in the 47th minute for the Tigers' first score.
Carla Scaniello answered twenty minutes later when she and Vicki Greenwell combined to net Memphis' second score in the 67th minute.
Memphis (8-3-0) out-shot Houston, 10-6, overall on the day. Jennifer Dry, who left the game in the second half due to injury, and Chelsea Davis registered Houston's sole shots on-goal. Oliver notched three saves.
The game marks the first time in seven lifetime meetings between the two schools that the Tigers have come away victorious.
Despite the loss, Houston has won four of its last seven games.
The loss drops Houston's record to 4-8-0 on the year, including 1-3-0 in C-USA play. The Cougars head on the road for four straight matches, including three league clashes, beginning next weekend at TCU on Oct. 8 and SMU, who joins Conference USA next year, on Oct. 10.
