Cougar Soccer Shuts Down Prairie View A&M

For the second straight game, the Cougar offense erupted and the defense turned in another stellar performance for the first shutout of the season as the University of Houston's women's soccer team came away with a 7-0 victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Sunday (Sept. 19) afternoon at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
Following her second straight "hat trick" in Friday night's win over Texas Southern, senior Nikki Hawkins led the Cougars with two goals and two assists, including eight shots overall on the day. Sophomore defender Sarah Fisher followed Hawkins with two goals of her own, four shots and an assist.
Hawkins first put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the sixth minute after Fisher fed her a pass that she sailed into the back right corner of the net. Fisher scored Houston's second goal in the 28th minute on a header following a tap from freshman Amanda Hale, and freshman Chelsea Davis, who netted three goals in the win over Texas Southern for her first career "hat trick," followed with the Cougars' third goal in the 32nd minute after a pass from Hawkins.
With a 3-0 lead entering the second half, Fisher put the Cougars on top by four when she shot a double-assisted pass from Hawkins and Davis into the net passed a diving Amy Miller, the Panthers' goalie, in the 55th minute. Hawkins notched her second goal of the game in the 79th minute after a pass from freshman Whitney Lonsford, and Lonsford fed the ball to sophomore Kelly McCartney a minute later for a score.
Lonsford then netted the final goal in the 85th minute.
Houston out-shot Prairie View A&M, 36-5, on the day and goalie Nicole Oliver made five stops to earn her third victory and first shutout of her career.
The Cougars have combined for 21 goals and 83 shots in the two victories over the weekend,
The win improves Houston's record to 3-5-0 on the year. The Cougars open Conference USA action next weekend at Tulane on Sept. 24 at 7:00p.m. and Southern Miss on Sept. 26 at 1:00p.m.
