BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Houston soccer team dropped its second-straight match, a 6-1 loss to LSU, Sunday at the LSU Soccer Complex.
The Cougars (2-2) played a strong first 10 minutes, taking the lead in the ninth minute on Stephanie Masci's (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek HS) first collegiate goal. Masci headed a service from Brenna Welch (Austin, Texas/McNeil HS) over LSU goalkeeper Jackie Moseley. It was Welch's first career assist.
Not much went right for the Cougars after the goal, as they were outshot 31-6 and gave up the six scores to the Tigers (3-1)
"Obviously a disappointing loss for us," head coach Bill Solberg said. "We'll talk it over as a team, figure out what we need to fix and move on. We'll be ready to play Wednesday."
Goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) was under siege for the last 80 minutes, making a career-best 10 saves in the loss.
LSU's Melissa Clarke added two goals and a pair of assists. She scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute, slotting a shot inside the left post off a corner kick from Malorie Rutledge. She assisted on Roslyn Jones' goal in the 33rd minute, crossing the ball from the end line in the box, allowing Jones to head it into the net.
Clarke's second tally came just after halftime, in the 48th minute, as she placed the ball inside the far post.
Michelle Makasini added a pair of goals as well, in the 58th and 84th minute, respectively. Both scores came from point-blank range with Clarke assisting on the first and Rachel Yepez on the second. Yepez added an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute after a steal at the top of the box.
Houston will look to rebound on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. matchup at Robertson Stadium with Texas Southern. The Cougars are 2-0 all-time against the Tigers and have outscored them by a 24-1 margin.
