HOUSTON - Six different Cougars scored a goal in Houston's 6-0 rout over McNeese State Sunday afternoon in Lake Charles, La.
McNeese held Houston scoreless through the first 42 minutes despite 13 shots from the Cougars. In the 43rd minute freshman Sami Sackos scored her first career goal and the flood gates opened.
Houston came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders and added five more goals in the next 26 minutes.
Senior Melanie Adelman wasted no time in securing her second goal of the season, putting the ball past the keeper in the 47th minute.
Sophomores Katelyn Rhodes and Morgan Vela added their first goals of the season to stretch the lead to four. Rhodes found the back of the net on her header from Adelman and Jessica Zavalza provided the assist for Vela.
Senior Lauri Byrne and junior Natalie Vu notched their first goals of the season in the 68th and 71st minutes. Byrne provided the assist for Vu.
Redshirt freshman Cami Koski posted her second straight clean sheet with three saves in the game. Koski was hardly tested as the Houston defense once again limited the opposition to single digit shot attempts (6).
The backline of Houston limited their Louisiana opposition this weekend to 10 total shots and only six of those needed saving by Koski.
Houston posted 29 shots and 17 shots on goal.
"It was great to see all the hard work we have put in on creating scoring opportunities and more importantly, turning those opportunities into goals," head coach Susan Bush said. "The defense is starting to gel and we're all getting on the same page. I'm very pleased with the two road wins we achieved this weekend and we're all ready to get back to work on Monday to get ready for this next weekend's opponents."
