Soccer Prepares For First Conference Road Trip

HOUSTON- The University of Houston soccer team will be hitting the road for its first conference road trip to face No. 10 UCF at 6 p.m. on Friday in Orlando, Fla., followed by a trip to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Miss at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"We are looking forward to this weekend," head coach Chris Pfau said. "Anytime you can play a nationally-ranked team you have to be excited. This will be a very good test for us. Not only are we playing a great UCF team, but turning around on Sunday and playing a good Southern Miss team. We will have to be ready, not only physically but mentally."
The Cougars (4-4-2) opened conference play with two double-overtime draws against SMU on Friday and Tulsa on Sunday. In the SMU match, senior forward Katelyn Rhodes scored her second goal of the season off a pass from sophomore forward Kayla Walker in the 16th minute to give Houston an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars would hold the Mustangs scoreless for the rest of the first half.
SMU came out shooting in the second half and scored three minutes in. Houston would answer two minutes later when junior midfielder Jasmine Martinez scored off a penalty kick after sophomore forward Kelsey Zamora was fouled inside the box. The Cougars did not hold the lead for long when SMU knotted the game once more in the 52nd minute.
On Sunday, Houston played scoreless soccer against the Golden Hurricane for the entire 110 minutes.
UCF
The Knights are currently No. 10 in the NSCCA/Continental Tire national poll. This is the sixth-consecutive week UCF has been named among the nation's top-10 team in the country.
UCF is now 7-2-1 on the season after opening conference play with a 2-1 loss to Memphis on Friday and a 6-0 victory over UAB on Sunday.
Friday marks the eighth time the two teams have met and the fourth time in Orlando. UCF leads the overall series 6-0-1. In the last meeting in Orlando in 2010, UCF won 2-1.
SOUTHERN MISS
The Golden Eagles are currently on a two-game losing streak following being shutout by UAB on Friday and a 5-2 loss to Memphis on Sunday. Junior forward Danica Roberts leads the team with three goals and six points.
Southern Miss leads the series with the Cougars 10-0-3. The Golden Eagles lead 6-0-1 in Hattiesburg. In 2010, the last time these two teams met in Hattiesburg, they tied 1-1 in double-overtime.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will return home to host East Carolina at 7 p.m., Oct. 5 and Marshall at 1 p.m., Oct. 7 at Robertson Stadium.
