Kicker makes nation-best five field goals in Houston win over Colorado
HOUSTON – After scoring 18 of Houston Football's 36 points against Colorado, Cougar kicker Ethan Sanchez was named the Big 12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Sanchez successfully kicked five field goals against the Buffaloes, the fifth 5+ field goal game in Houston history and the first since Richie Leone went 5-for-6 on Sept. 7, 2013. The mark tied for the second most made field goals in a game by a Cougar and leads the country this season.
The Dallas, Ga., native posted makes from 52, 43, 47, 35 and 49 yards, setting a new career high for made field goals in a game while narrowly missing his longest field goal mark of 53 yards set on Sept. 28, 2024, while at Old Dominion. The tally marked Sanchez's 11th multi-field goal game and his second of the season.
The 52-yarder with 6:42 left in the first quarter was Houston's longest kick at home since Oct. 13, 2012, and longest at any site since Dalton Witherspoon nailed a 52-yarder against Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 28, 2021. It was also the 19th longest successful kick in the NCAA this season and longest by a kicker at a Texas FBS school.
Overall, Sanchez has made seven field goals this season with is only misses coming from 47 and 50 yards out.
