
Softball Drops Opener to Tulsa

Cougars fall to 6-4 in conference play with the loss
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team fell to Tulsa, 7-0, in the series opener on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Graduate pitcher Kenna Wilkey (14-10) earned the decision for Houston (19-22, 6-4) after pitching six innings and striking out five. Maura Moore (11-10) tossed a complete-game shutout for Tulsa (18-23, 4-6), the team's sixth shutout of the season.

Player Highlights
1st | Tulsa took the lead early. With Haley Morgan on second, Imani Edwards singled to left-center to put the Golden Hurricane up 1-0.

While Houston loaded the bases in its half of the inning, Moore was able to keep the Cougars off the board to keep the one-run lead.Â

4th | The Golden Hurricane extended its lead in the fourth. After Tulsa led off the inning with a single, Rylee Keith hit her fifth home run of the year to extend the team's lead to 3-0.Â

7th | After plating a run in the sixth, Tulsa put two runners in scoring positon with only one out in the seventh. Claira Skaggs reached on a fielder's choice to drive home a run, resulting in runners on the corners, and after a ground out put a pair advanced Skaggs into scoring positon, Keith singled to left to drive home both runners, giving Tulsa the 7-0 win.

Houston continues its series against Tulsa on Saturday at 2 p.m. The series wraps on Sunday at noon. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.Â

Sunday is Houston's Bark at the Park Day and fans are encouraged to bring their dogs for the noon start against Tulsa. Alongside Bark at the Park, the 2022 World Series Champion Houston Astros will continue their Trophy Tour as the Commissioner's Trophy makes an appearance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cougar Softball Stadium.

- Senior infielder Britaney Shaw tallied her seventh multi-hit game of the season, a new personal best after five in 2021 and six in 2022.

- With five strikeouts in the game, Wilkey moved into sole possession of ninth on Houston's career strikeouts list with 265. She's one away from tying Barbie Love (2005-2008) for eighth on the all-time list. Â
