Cougars couldn’t overcome late surge from Golden Hurricane
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team, after having to wait out a 45-minute delay due to severe weather in the area, fell to Tulsa after a late surge by the Golden Hurricane on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Entering in relief, Kylee Nash (9-11) earned the victory for Tulsa (20-23, 6-6), while starter Maura Moore, who reentered in relief, earned her first save of the season. Tossing her 13th complete game this year, Kenna Wilkey (14-11) took the decision for Houston (19-24, 6-6). Her four strikeouts on the afternoon move the senior up to sole possession of eighth on Houston's all-time strikeouts list with 269 while wearing the red and white.

1st | Tulsa took the early lead, plating a run on a sacrifice fly that Houston turned into a double play, catching the runner tagging at second for the team's 15th of the season.Â

Houston nearly tied it in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on the corners, but Tulsa's Moore shut the door to keep the Cougars off the board.Â

2nd | Houston responded in the second. Sophomore Brooke Lorenzo started the scoring, driving home sophomore Ja'Naiya Thomas with an RBI single. Thomas and senior catcher Kati Ray Brown scored later in the inning off Cantu's second double of the afternoon to make the score 3-1.

7th | After trading runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, Tulsa retook the lead with four runs in the seventh, capitalizing on a pair of Houston errors in the frame. With two on, Mackenzie Denson singled home a run with another scoring on an error. Denson later scored on another error, with Tulsa adding another unearned run in the frame to take a 6-4 lead.

Moore, reentering in relief, shut the door in the bottom of the inning, securing the win for the Golden Hurricane.

Houston goes back on the road for a three-game series against UCF in Orlando. The slate kicks off on Friday, April 28 at 5 p.m. CT, followed by a Saturday game at 3 p.m. CT and the series finale on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.

- The game featured a 45-minute weather delay as storms passed through the Houston area. All four of Houston's conference series have been affected by weather, with games getting postponed against Memphis and East Carolina and weather delays against Wichita State and Tulsa.Â
- Senior infielder Bree Cantu hit two doubles in the game, marking the third time a Houston hitter has hit two in a game this season.
- Cantu leads the team with eight multi-RBI games this season. She's up to 12 in her career.
