Saint Louis netted solo goals in the first and second halves, respectively, and held off the battling Cougar offense as the Billikens captured a 2-0 victory over the University of Houston women's soccer team on Friday night (Oct. 1) at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
After commanding the ball for the opening 20 minutes of play, the Billiken offense broke away from the Houston defense and carried the ball down the field. Jamie Perry and Courtney Hulcer combined on consecutive passes to Cassi Winchell, who placed a hard kick across the right side of the net and into the back left-hand corner past a diving Nicole Oliver, the Houston goalie, for Saint Louis' first goal at the 21:43 mark.
The Billikens notched their second goal in the 51st minute when Dee Guempel scored on a pass from Maureen Hughes.
Senior Anne Gasser and sophomore Sarah Fisher led the Cougars with two shots apiece, and both of Fisher's were on-goal.
Saint Louis out-shot Houston, 22-9, while out-fouling the Cougars, 11-7. Oliver notched nine saves on the night to bring her season total to 34.
Despite the loss, Houston has won four of its last six games.
The loss drops Houston's record to 4-7-0 on the year, including 1-2-0 in C-USA play. The Cougars remain home and host the Memphis Tigers on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1:00pm, before heading back on the road for four straight matches beginning Oct. 8, at TCU. The Cougars are a perfect 6-0 lifetime against the Tigers.
