The offense came to life as the Cougars scored more goals (14) and made more shots (47) than in any match in school history as the University of Houston's women's soccer team cruised to a commanding 14-1 victory over cross-town opponent Texas Southern on Friday night (Sept. 17) at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
Senior Nikki Hawkins and freshman Chelsea Davis combined for six of Houston's 14 goals with a team-leading three each. Freshmen Brooke Simon, Amanda Hale and Whitney Lonsford followed with two goals each, and sophomore Sarah Fisher and freshman Ashleigh Williams each added one.
Fisher led the Cougar brigade with four assists en route to setting another program record with the most assists in a single match. She also had seven shots on the night, including three on-goal.
With three goals on the night, Hawkins, a two-time All-Conference USA selection and team captain, has now registered eight of Houston's 19 goals this season and increases her career goal total to 24, the best in Cougar history. In addition, her eight shots in the win over Texas Southern tied the third-best performance in a match in school history.
Houston netted 10 goals in the first half, with its first coming 43 seconds into the game on a pass by Hawkins and a clean shot by Simon. Williams followed with a goal in the 14th minute, and Houston followed with four goals in the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 29th, 30th, 33rd, 35th and 41st minutes, respectively.
The Lady Tigers notched their sole goal in the 43rd minute, when Jennifer Tavera's slow roller fell through the hands of Houston goalie Nicole Oliver and to the back of the net.
The 11 total assists and 13-goal margin of victory also set team records for Houston.
The win improves Houston's record to 2-5-0 on the year. They host fellow Texas school Prairie View A&M on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:00pm, before opening Conference USA action next weekend at Tulane on Sept. 24 at 7:00p.m. and Southern Miss on Sept. 26 at 1:00p.m.
