HOUSTON - UCF's Becca Thomas tallied a pair of goals and an assist, leading UCF to a 5-1 win over the University of Houston soccer team, snapping UH's four-game winning streak, Sunday in Conference USA action on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars (7-5, 1-1 C-USA) picked up an equalizer in the 30th minute, but it was all UCF after that as the Golden Knights (6-4-1, 2-0 C-USA) tallied four scores in the final 56 minutes to earn their second-straight league win. UH has dropped all three matches against UCF since the Golden Knights joined C-USA a year ago.
UCF's Roberta Pelarigo knocked in the game winner in the 34th minute on a breakaway against UH keeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS). Becca Thomas served a ball to the feet of Pelarigo and a burst of speed separated her from the UH defense. Scott came off her line to cut the angle down and Pelarigo sent it to the right corner of the net.
Thomas scored the first of her two goals in the 79th minute. She fired a shot from 35-yards out past a diving Scott and made a similar play in the 90th minute with the clock winding down. From 10 yards closer, Scott again sent a long volley past Scott and into the back of the net.
Pelarigo added her second tally in the 87th minute after another one-on-one situation with Scott. Pelarigo's effort was blocked by Scott, but not wide enough as the ball tipped off the near post and over the line.
Hanna Wilde opened up the scoring in the 26th minute, chipping a rebound past Scott from inside the six-yard box. Nikki Moore had the original shot, which was tipped by Scott and ended up at the feet of Wilde.
Houston answered in the 30th minute when Brittney Pfeiffer (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin HS) knocked in a rebound of her own off a Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS). The ball was batted around in the box and ended up in Pfeiffer's possession. She sent it home from point-blank range and evened the score at one apiece.
Pfeiffer had a chance for a second goal minutes later as she banked a diving header off the near post and out of bounds.
Scott and UCF `keeper Jennifer Manis each made five saves on the afternoon, with all the stops coming in the second 45 minutes.
Houston heads back on the road after its longest homestand of the year. The Cougars will take on UTEP at 8 p.m. CDT Friday before traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo. to face off against the newest member of C-USA, Colorado College, at 2 p.m. Sunday. Colorado College joined C-USA this summer as a replacement for Tulane, who dropped soccer temporarily following Hurricane Katrina.
