Soccer Drops 5-1 Road Decision To UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - The University of Houston soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to UTEP in a Conference USA match Friday night at University Field.
The Cougars (7-6, 1-2 C-USA) lost their second-straight match and have been outscored by a 10-2 margin in the last two contests. UTEP improved its record to 10-4 on the season, 1-2 in C-USA play.
Maegan Kiphart (Parker, Colo./Chaparral HS) tallied the lone Houston score of the night in the 69th minute. Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) served a corner kick into the box and Kiphart one-timed it home for her second goal of the season.
Houston was outshot by a 22-13 margin with only four attempts from UH going on goal. The Miners took 13 shots in the second 45 minutes alone. Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) suffered the loss for the Cougars, making seven saves on the night.
Five different players scored for UTEP, which boasted the nations No. 12 offense entering the game. Tameka Sumter opened up the scoring in the 38th minute after a thru ball from Anoop Josan led to a one-on-one situation with Scott. Sumter won the challenge and placed the ball in UH's empty net. Josan finished with three assists on the evening. Cortney Casey followed in the 44th minute with a one-time laser off a corner kick from Josan, giving UTEP a two-goal cushion at the break.
Jami Tullius sent a rocket shot into the upper 90 of the net in the 64th minute and seven minutes later, Kelli Yeamans headed home another corner kick from Josan. The final tally of the night came in the 86th minute after a thru ball from Angie Kleinfelder led to a breakaway for Lauree Thibaut, who finished her chance in the lower left of UH's net.
Houston is back in action Sunday at the newest C-USA member, Colorado College. The Tigers joined C-USA in women's soccer as a replacement for Tulane, who dropped soccer temporarily following Hurricane Katrina. Kickoff is slotted for 2 p.m. CDT.
