COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Despite a goal by Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) in the third minute, the University of Houston soccer team could not hold the momentum and fell by a 2-1 count to Colorado College in a steady rain Sunday at Stewart Field.
The Cougars (7-7, 1-3 Conference USA) dropped their third-straight match while the Tigers (10-2-1, 3-1 C-USA) won their second in-a-row.
UH's lone goal came off the foot of Mundy early in the game. The senior received a ball at her feet from Jennifer Dry (Norman, Okla./Norman HS), turned to face the goal and sent a shot past CC keeper Geneva Sills, who slipped on the wet turf. It was Mundy's eighth goal of the season and 22nd of her career.
CC netted the equalizer in the 12th minute when Amara Wilson headed a cross from Emily Beans past UH goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS). The game-winning tally came in the waning minutes of the opening half as Beans worked her way behind the UH defense and beat Scott for the winner.
Scott made nine saves in the loss as CC outshot UH by a 20-13 margin. Sills made five saves for the Tigers, earning the win.
Houston returns home next weekend with matchups against SMU and Tulsa on the horizon. UH and SMU face off Friday at 7 p.m. CDT while the Tulsa match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff Sunday.
