HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Soccer team dropped a tough-fought 1-0 decision to the RV Tulsa Golden Hurricane, in American Athletic Conference play on Sunday, in Tulsa, Okla.
Sophomores Vanessa Almaguer and Selena Peters led the Cougars with two shots-on-goal each, and senior goalkeeper Jordan Brown stopped three shots, but the Cougars came up just short despite putting more shots on goal than the Golden Hurricane (6-4).
"I am so proud of the effort of this team this weekend," Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "Today we played a Tulsa team that in some polls is ranked, and we played well. "We created some very good opportunities where their keeper made a great save, or we hit this post, and we defended as a team."
The two squads played to a scoreless first half, but Tulsa found the scoreboard early in the second period with what would prove to be the game-winning goal, in the 48th minute. Rachel Thun played a ball from Danielle Hoover into the middle of the box where she put the shot into the top-right corner from five yards out.
Sophomores Margo McEntire and Hannah Dauzat each also added a shot-on-goal for the Cougars, while freshman defender Hayley Hubbard played her ninth full-time game of the season.
"We are so close, and we are doing some very good things, and our players have bought in," Pfau said. Right now with these teams the difference is just experience. We are just as good but their experience in tight games has been what has gotten them through. I told the team you keep playing like that, and it will come."
