
Houston Drops Bout to #3 Kentucky

Cougars fall in first matchup against Top 3 opponent since 2023
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Houston Volleyball team fell to #3 Kentucky in three sets at Historic Memorial Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
Houston's (5-3) block was a highlight for the Cougars, stopping Kentucky (5-2) nine times in three sets behind six stops from redshirt senior Kellen Morin. Behind her, senior Barakat Rahmon tallied three stuffs while both sophomore Alyssa Gonzales and freshman Tara Greenberry recorded two.
Junior Halle Schroder led Houston with seven kills while Gonzales and senior Brenya Reid each posted six. Working as one of two liberos for the Cougars, senior Alana Torres-Rivera paced the team with nine digs.
Houston claimed an early edge, winning six of the first 10 points, but Kentucky evened the score at 8-8 and took the lead for good in the set with a 4-0 run. The Wildcats went on to win the opener, 25-16.
Neither team was able to seize momentum in the second. Tied five times before seeing a 10-10 score, the teams continued to trade blows after as the set saw 13 ties overall. After falling behind 23-20 as the Wildcats surged with a 4-0 run, Houston clawed back at 23-all but dropped back-to-back points to give the set to Kentucky, 25-23.
The Wildcats pawed their way in front early in the third. Starting with a 6-1 run, Kentucky used a pair of 3-0 runs to go up 18-10 and sealed the win with a 25-13 set victory.
UP NEXT
Houston plays its final weekend of non-conference play as its hosts Liberty, McNeese and North Alabama for the Cougar Challenge next weekend. The Cougars start against Liberty at 7 p.m., Friday, before playing both North Alabama (1 p.m.) and McNeese (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
