HOUSTON - While many University of Houston students are celebrating the summer, several members of the Cougar golf team have enjoyed tremendous success during the break.
Senior Eric Adler, juniors Will Dusenbury and Jordan Rumora and sophomores Curtis Reed, Wesley McClain and Jesse Droemer have been competing throughout the spring and summer months since school ended. They will soon take part in three prestigious amateur events, the Texas Amateur, the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the Southern Amateur, during the weeks ahead.
Those student-athletes recently finished the 2010-11 season and helped lead the Cougars to a fourth-place finish at the Conference USA Championships. It was the program's best showing at the league's annual postseason event since 2003.
TEXAS AMATEUR
Adler, Dusenbury, Reed and McClain are scheduled to compete at the Texas Amateur on June 16-19 at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.
Those Cougars will join 140 other top amateur golfers in the state in 72 holes of stroke play. Following the completion of the second round, the field will be cut to the low 54 and ties.
U.S. AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP
Sophomore Jesse Droemer also will compete at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on June 27-July 2 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore. The Sealy, Texas, native earned his place at the event after shooting a 139 and finishing second at a sectional qualifier at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston on June 7.
Reed, a native of Castroville, Texas, earned a place as the top alternate out of the sectional qualifier at Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas, on May 23-24 after posting a 36-hole score of 147.
SOUTHERN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Rumora, Reed and McClain recently earned their places at the Southern Amateur Championship with stellar play during an 18-hole qualifier on Thursday at Lakeside Country Club in Houston.
Rumora won the event with a 4-under-par 68, while Reed tied for second with a 70. McClain joined four other players at even-par 72 and was one of only eight players to shoot par or better at the event.
With their stellar play, Rumora, Reed and McClain will compete at the 105th Southern Amateur Championship on July 13-16 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. They will be part of nearly 170 amateur players who will vie for the George W. Adair Trophy.
THE 2010-11 SEASON
This summer's success is only part of a recent trend in Cougar golf this season. In 2010-11, the Cougars captured five top-five team finishes, including a second-place showing at the Cabo Collegiate during the fall.
Reed and McClain were two of only three players to compete in all 11 tournaments with Reed's 73.76 scoring average and 12 rounds of par or better leading the team. With a fourth-place finish at the C-USA Championships, he also was named to the league's All-Tournament Team.
McClain finished with 11 rounds of par or better and tied for seventh at the Lone Star Invitational in mid-October. The Diboll, Texas, native also was one of three Cougars named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, joining Droemer and sophomore Bryn Flanagan.
Droemer was one of the Cougars most consistent players throughout the season. He tied with Reed for team-high honors with 12 rounds of par or better while competing in all but one event.
Dusenbury joined the Cougars at the semester break and made an impact quickly. He finished second on the team with a 73.86 scoring average and tied with Reed for the season-low round with a 68 in the second round at the Desert Shootout on March 19, 2011.
Rumora appeared in three tournaments last season and ranked third among the Cougars with a 74.11 average. The Houston native and Cy-Fair High product tied for 11th place at the Rice Intercollegiate to open the spring campaign.
Adler made his lone appearance of the season at the Jim West Intercollegiate during the regular-season finale.
