
Men’s Golf Finishes Season at NCAA Urbana Regional

All five Cougars shoot even-par or better in Wednesday’s Final Round
URBANA, Ill. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program saved its best for last at the NCAA Urbana Regional, posting a team score of 7-under 277 to finish seventh at Atkins Golf Club.
Playing on the 7,533-yard, par-71 course, #38 Houston finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a score of 862 and lowered their team total for the second straight day. The Cougars fired the second-lowest team round of the day Wednesday, trailing only co-champion #2 Oklahoma State
All five Cougars in the starting lineup shot even par or lower led by junior Hudson Weibel's 3-under 68. Sophomore Chi Chun Chen and senior Wolfgang Glawe each finished with 69s while seniors Laurenz Schiergen and Jacob Borow each posted even-par 71s.
Starting off No. 10, Weibel moved to 3-under with three birdies through his first five holes. The Dallas native returned to even par following a double bogey on No. 16 and No. 17 but closed the tournament with three birdies and seven pars to tie for 21st at 214.
Glawe stood at 1-over through his first seven holes but returned to even par with his first birdie of the day on the par-4 18th hole and moved under par with another birdie on the next hole.
Following his final bogey of the day at No. 4, the St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 and led the Cougars with a score of 1-under 212 to tie for 17th.
Chen sank a team-high seven birdies on the way to his own 69. The Taiwan native endured a rough start that saw him 3-over through his first two holes.
He sank birdies on three of his next holes and then drained four birdies in a five-hole stretch midway through his second nine to finish a 218 to tie for 41st.
Schiergen and Borow posted three birdies apiece in their final rounds as they completed their Houston careers.
#2 Oklahoma State and #14 Illinois shared the team championship with a score of 837. #35 UNLV (846), Troy (850) and #23 Texas Tech (851) finished among the Top Five and advance to the NCAA Championships.
#10 North Carolina (859) finished sixth at 859 while #47 Marquette (863), #26 Long Beach State (866) and Illinois State (867) completed the Top 10.
Michigan's Hunter Thomson earned medalist honors with a score of 10-under 203 and earned an individual qualification to the NCAA Championships.
NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
With this season's selection, Houston Men's Golf has competed as a team in 25 NCAA Regionals during the program's rich history with nine Top-Five team finishes.
This marked the fifth straight season in which Houston played as a team at an NCAA Regional.
It also marked the 11th NCAA Regional in which the Cougars competed under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his 16th season at Houston.
Houston captured the team championship at the 1998 NCAA Central Regional at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas while four Cougars – Michael Perras, 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional; Blair Hamilton, 2016 NCAA Lubbock Regional; Brett Callas, 2003 NCAA Central Regional; and Dean Larsson, 1994 NCAA Central Regional – earned medalist honors at their respective events.
A year ago, the Cougars finished sixth at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional at University Club, falling only three strokes shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships. All-American and Big 12 Player of the. Year Santiago De La Fuente finished 14th with a score of even-par 216 to lead Houston.
